“I literally couldn’t walk for two days when that happened and eventually my drug use f–kin’ skyrocketed,” Eminem recalled. “I had f–kin’ 10 drug dealers at one time that I’m getting my s–t from. Seventy-five to 80 Valiums a night, which is a lot. I don’t know how the f–k I’m still here.” Eminem was eventually hospitalised in December 2007 following a methadone overdose, with doctors telling him he had ingested the equivalent of four bags of heroin.

“I got sober because of this guy,” he told the audience at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards after Cooper presented him with a trophy. “I had absolutely no value for myself and this self-destructive path, it very quickly brought me to a real crisis point and it wasn’t clear at the time the reason. Maybe it was divine intervention.” Throughuot, he’s been candid about his sobriety. “It was only until I saw myself after that I was like, ‘All right, I need to fix myself,'” he recalled in June 2021 when  he said he was more than one month sober at the time. “It was like a few pictures of me on a boat and I’m all, like, bloated out, and I call it pills-and-booze face….My face was just like 10 times more than it is now. And I just didn’t like myself very much, so then I made a change.” In May 2023, the One Direction alum celebrated being 100 days sober.”I feel amazing,” he said at the time.

Eminem Admitted It Took His Brain ‘A Long Time’ to Recover After His 2007 Overdose

  1. Obviously, if I ended up in jail, the album probably wouldn’t have come out and nothing with my rap career would’ve ever happened.
  2. Check out additional interviews in the magazine with Yung Miami, Bobby Shmurda, JID, GloRilla, Yvngxchris, Sleazyworld Go, Styles P, Jim Jones, Symba, Reason, singer Jessie Reyez, actor Trevante Rhodes and music executive Katina Bynum.
  3. So, if XXL would’ve even had a conversation with me, maybe they would’ve understood me more.
  4. The strangest and probably the greatest thing that’s happened to me over these past 25 years in a professional sense was getting to meet all my heroes.
  5. “There might be enough songs but they’re terrible songs,” he added, clarifying there is no second Relapse project.

“There are a lot of songs still that did not leak out from Relapse.” “I had f—in’ 10 drug dealers at one time that I’m getting my s— from. Seventy-five to 80 Valiums a night, which is a lot.” He is also an example of how dangerous prescription drugs can be. “It wasn’t like I was stumbling around all day,” he admitted. “I was fully functioning — I wrote more songs then than I do now. That was the scary part.”

But, despite his overwhelmingly successful career, Eminem — like many artists before him — fell into the trappings of drug addiction. His addiction to prescription pills soon took over his life, and he recalls the moment he nearly died after taking an overdose. My liver, kidneys, everything… They didn’t think I was going to make it. I want to do things that nobody from this point on can ever top. And again, it’s subjective, and every rapper, especially rappers in competitive rap, wants to be the best rapper. So, I look for the younger generation to push me.

You can watch Eminem’s interview from the film by scrolling down the page and clicking ‘play’. Eminem has openly discussed his drug addiction and the time he overdosed in a new documentary. It wasn’t until 2008 that Eminem decided he wasn’t about to lose himself to drugs. According to the New York Times, he checked himself into rehab early that year and started the full 12-step program of a recovering addict. Em goes on to recount one story from that time period, when he performed for BET’s 106 & Park with 50 Cent and G-Unit and was interviewed afterwards. Eminem soon relapsed, but eventually did manage to kick the addiction.

I remember things started getting really, really bad when me, 50 and G-Unit did BET’s 106 & Park. We performed “You Don’t Know” on what was eminem addicted to the show and then we did an interview afterward. One of the hosts was talking to me and I could not understand a word she was saying.

In the 2012 documentary How to Make Money Selling Drugs, the rapper opened up about his struggles with addiction. “Drinking caused weight gain,” he told Today in September 2022, “but it also weighed down my mental state.” After publicly celebrating six years of sobriety on tour in 2018, the singer stunned fans later that same year with the release of the confessional single “Sober,” which revealed that she had relapsed. She eventually sought help and noted that “it took some time to get on my own two feet.” While accepting the 2018 Woman of the Year Award by the Peggy Albrecht Friendly House, a residential program for women recovering from substance and alcohol abuse, Moore spoke about the “self-destructive path” that nearly derailed her career. “I don’t discuss this a lot,” he said during a May 2024 podcast appearance.
