“I literally couldn’t walk for two days when that happened and eventually my drug use f–kin’ skyrocketed,” Eminem recalled. “I had f–kin’ 10 drug dealers at one time that I’m getting my s–t from. Seventy-five to 80 Valiums a night, which is a lot. I don’t know how the f–k I’m still here.” Eminem was eventually hospitalised in December 2007 following a methadone overdose, with doctors telling him he had ingested the equivalent of four bags of heroin.

“I got sober because of this guy,” he told the audience at the 2020 National Board of Review Annual Awards after Cooper presented him with a trophy. “I had absolutely no value for myself and this self-destructive path, it very quickly brought me to a real crisis point and it wasn’t clear at the time the reason. But, despite his overwhelmingly successful career, Eminem — like many artists before him — fell into the trappings of drug addiction. His addiction to prescription pills soon took over his life, and he recalls the moment he nearly died after taking an overdose. My liver, kidneys, everything… They didn’t think I was going to make it. I want to do things that nobody from this point on can ever top. And again, it’s subjective, and every rapper, especially rappers in competitive rap, wants to be the best rapper. So, I look for the younger generation to push me.

It wasn’t until 2008 that Eminem decided he wasn’t about to lose himself to drugs. According to the New York Times, he checked himself into rehab early that year and started the full 12-step program of a recovering addict.
